개요
빨래하는 페미니즘은 아내와 엄마로 살면서 삶의 방향을 잃은 저자가 페미니즘을 공부하는 과정을 담은 책이다. 왜 빨래하는 페미니즘으로 번역됐는지 모르겠는데, 원제는 Reading women : how the great books of feminism changed my life. 페미니즘 고전에 관한 책이다. 페미니즘 강의를 따라가면서 울스턴크라프트부터 버지니아 울프, 보부아르를 거쳐 3세대 페미니즘까지 주요 저서를 섭렵하는 과정을 적었다. 90년대 미국에서 대학을 다닌 X세대(Gen X)가 맞벌이 아내와 엄마로 살면서 페미니즘을 재발견하는 이야기라서, 기혼자들이 공감할 부분이 많다. 가사도 육아도 공동으로 하는 '좋은' 남편을 만나도 어떤 문제가 여자들을 기다리는지 보여줌. 미국에서 '성평등이 이미 이루어진' 시대에 명문대를 졸업하고 언론 출판계에서 커리어를 쌓을 때까지는 자신이 여자라는 사실이 전혀 문제가 되지 않았는데, 임신과 출산을 거치면서 '합리적'인 선택을 하다 보니 어느새 커리어도 자신의 인생도 없어져 버린 것을 깨닫고 돌파구를 찾기 위해 대학 때 배웠던 페미니즘을 다시 공부하기로 한다. 친구에게 얘기하듯 쉽게 쓰였고, 여러 페미니즘의 고전이 소개되어 있어 입문서로 좋다.
