여성운동여권신장을 위한 사회운동을 말한다.

정의

Beckwith(2007)는 다음과 같이 여성운동을 정의하였다.

women's movements can be defined as social movements where women are the major actors and leaders, who make gendered identity claims as the basis for the movements, thus defined, permit scholars to recognize and to analyze feminist movements as a subset of the larger group of women's move-ments. … Feminist movements can be distinguished from the larger set of women's movements on the basis of their goals and aims. …feminist movements are a type of women's movement that challenges patriarchy, and contests political, social and other power arrangements of domination and subordina-tion on the basis of gender…

역사

19세기의 여성운동

케이트 밀렛은 모든 여성들을 굴복시키려는 남성들의 시도가 계속되었음에도 불구하고, 많은 여성들이 남성의 완전한 통제하에 들어가지 않았다는 점을 강조하기 위해 시작된 여성 운동으로 1848년 뉴욕 주 세네카 폴즈의 여성인권대회를 꼽았다.

그러나 1800년대의 여성 운동은 깊이 묻혀 있는 성별/젠더 체계의 뿌리에까지 도전하지 못했기 때문에 여성을 완전히 해방시키지 못했다. 그 결과 20세기의 가부장제 세력은 19세기 페미니스트들에게 빼았겼던 터전을 다시 회복했다.
