Level Briefings
Note that any misspellings appear in-game.
Brief
You are to work diligently and discreetly here today, while eliminating evidence of previous 'inhabitants' and the aftermath of the 'test' that was so thoroughly conducted. One hopes that you will recognize the consequences in displeasing those that are so rigorous in their undertakings.. As a similar matter of urgency, you are to clean and clear the 'tunnel' networks that twist their way around the facility, as important scientific studies are to be conducted ASAP. So work with haste, and within appropriate company protocol.. |
Respawn Brief
A dissapointing performance by one of your colleagues led to their death within this prison facility. We are sending you in to replace them in the hopes that you will recognize the need for proper conduct where your peer did not. Ensure the complex, and especially the tunnels are in a presentable state before the researchers arrive. Failure to do so will reflect very poorly on your ongoing evaluation. Lastly, a word of caution in relation to your colleagues presently on-site. Do NOT trust them... |

Trivia
- Unlike other levels, the toilets in Pestilent Penitentiary do not clean the Mop.
- This level makes several references to the movie Alien 3.
- The prison colony Fury 164 is inspired by Fiorina "Fury" 164, the location of the movie Alien 3, both being owned by a corporation.
- One of the inmates led the others through religious faith, similar to the movie's character Leonard Dillon.
- The aesthetic of the prison and the insect-like burrowing Mantis aliens resemble the Nova Prospekt prison and Antlions from the video game Half-Life 2.
- The prison ship Cortex Strikers mentioned by one of the prisoner is a reference to the UMS Vortex Rikers from the video game Unreal.
- The Emergence Day on the planet Sera mentioned by one of the prisoners is a reference to the video game series Gears of War.
- The Mantis alien creatures found in this level were first mentioned in Unrefinery. However, their blood in that map has shades of yellow, while it is greener in Pestilent Penitentiary.
- This is the only non-legacy level to have only notes and no PDAs. This is also the only one for which the incident is not dated.
- Some PIDs have names which make references.
- One PID belongs to a prisoner called "Prisoner 404 Not Found", a reference to the 404 not found page.
- One PID is called "Prisoner 666", a number found in the Christian Bible's Book of Reveleations, commonly associated with the devil.
- One PID is called "Prisoner 420", a possible reference to cannabis culture.
