개요
욘시(Jónsi Birgisson)는 아이슬란드 밴드 시규어 로스(Sigur Rós)의 보컬이자 기타리스트이다. 욘시의 남자친구 알렉스 소머즈(Alex Somers)는 미국의 비주얼 아티스트이자 뮤지션이다. 라이캬비크에 함께 사는 그들은 로푸드 비건(Raw Food Vegan)으로, 레시피북을 발간하고 홈페이지에 쿠킹 영상을 올리기도 했다.

10년 넘게 채식을 했다. 천천히 채식을 했는데, 처음엔 고기를 덜 먹으면서 시작했고 몸이 그렇게 하라고 말했던 것 같다. 동물 때문에 채식을 시작한 것은 아니었지만, 고기를 피할수록 동물에게 벌어진 일들이 역겨워졌다. 고기를 보면 이젠 그 고기의 출처인 동물을 본다.
I have been vegetarian for over ten years. It was something that happened gradually, I just started eating less and less meat, I think my body was telling me to. I didn’t go vegetarian because of the animals, but the longer I have avoided meat, the more disgusted I am by what happens to them. When I look at meat, I see the animal it came from.

지난 몇 년 동안 비건으로 지낸 욘시는 로푸드 신자답게 음악을 논할 때와 전혀 다르게 열정적으로 이야기를 했다. 이 주제를 공부하며 책까지 낸 그는 준전문가였다. 그는 우리 중 많은 이들이 로푸드의 장점을 모른 채 지낸다는 사실이 경멸스러운 듯했다. 로푸드가 외식을 자주하는 사람을 어색하고 불편케 한다면, 그는 이런 종류의 불편을 항상 생각했고 바로 이것이 그가 대중 앞에 나서는 또 다른 방식인 셈이었다. "확실한 건, 이게 당신을 사회의 낙오자로 만들 거예요. 그런데 전 이 점이 좋아요. 음악을 모호하게 만드는 것에 끌렸듯이 음식도 그렇죠. 남들과 다른 것도 좋지만 로푸드 그 자체가 매우 좋습니다. 훌륭하고, 맛있고! 자기가 직접 치즈를 만들 수 있다면 누가 (대신 만드는) 끔찍한 버거를 먹고 싶겠어요?
For the past few years, Birgisson, a vegan, has been a disciple of raw food, and he speaks about it with a passion he can never quite match when discussing his own music. Having studied the subject and even written a book about it (unpublished, but dispensed freely among friends), he is quite the expert. The fact that so many of us remain ignorant of its benefits fills him with disdain. And if this makes things awkward for a man who likes to eat out a lot, then it's a kind of awkwardness Birgisson has always sought. It's another way for him to stand out from the crowd. "It makes you a social outcast, definitely, but I think I like that. I sometimes think I am drawn to obscure food the same way I am to obscure music. I like to be different. But I also very much like raw food itself. It's wonderful! Tasty! Who wants a horrible burger when they can make their own cheese instead?
