2 줄거리
똑같으면 재미없지 깨부수고 벗어 던져, 너답게!
오랜 연인이던 조커와 헤어진 '할리 퀸(마고 로비)'은 처음 맞이한 해방에 황홀함을 느낀다. 하지만 조커라는 방패막이 사라지자 평생 처음 무방비 상태에 놓인 할리 퀸을 고담시에서 가장 비열한 범죄왕 로만 시오니스(이완 맥그리거)와 고담의 모든 갱들이 노린다.
통제 불능의 상태에서 카산드라라는 소녀가 로만의 부하에게서 모든 권력과 고담시 지하 세계 전체의 지배권을 차지할 열쇠인 금융 정보가 암호화되어 있는 다이아몬드를 훔치면서 사건은 겉잡을 수 없이 급변한다.
로만 손에 죽을 위기에 처한 할리 퀸은 헌트리스, 블랙 카나리, 르네 몬토야와 새로운 팀을 결성해 로만에 맞서는데…[1]

4.1 할리 퀸
본명 '할린 프랜시스 퀸젤'. 어린 시절 아버지에게 계속하여 버려졌지만, 끈질기게 집으로 돌아왔던 어린 할리는 결국 수녀원에 보내지고 그곳에서 엄격한 수녀들 손에 자라게 된다. 대학에 진학하여 심리학 박사 학위를 취득한 할리은 아캄 정신병원에서 정신과 의사로서 조커의 치료를 전담하게 되고, 곧 사이코패스인 그와 사랑에 빠져 조커의 아캄 병원 탈출을 돕는다. 일련의 사건으로 화학 약품 통에 빠진 후 완전히 다른 사람이 된 할리는 조커의 범죄를 돕는 역할을 수행하게 된다. 하지만 '성공한 남자의 뒤에는 언제나 훌륭한 여성이 있다'는 말을 인용하며 자신의 업적을 조커가 전부 가로채가는 현실을 마주하게 되고, 결국 조커에게 이용당하다 버려진다. 여기서부터 할리퀸의 새로운 서사가 시작된다.
본 작품에서는 위 내용이 5분이 될까 말까한 애니메이션으로 처리된 채 도입부를 차지한다. 그야말로 '할리퀸의 황홀한 해방'이니만큼 그의 과거는 화려하게 날아가는 폭죽처럼 펼쳐지다가 순식간에 사라진다.
4.2 블랙 카나리
본명 다이나 랜스. 블랙 카나리는 로만이 운영하는 클럽에서 가수로 일할 때 얻은 별명이다. 술에 취한 할리 퀸에게 수작을 부리는 남자들을 무력으로 제압하며 로만의 마음에 들게 되고, 그날부로 로만의 새 운전사가 된다(할리 퀸이 전 운전사의 다리를 부러뜨리는 바람에 공석이었다). 카산드라와는 같은 건물에 거주하는 이웃이다. 그의 어머니에게서 물려받은 '능력'을 가지고 있다.
4.3 르네 몬토야
고담 시의 베테랑 경찰이자 형사로 오래 전 큰 공을 세웠으나 남자 동료가 이를 가로채어 서장이 되고, 그 이후 르네는 몇 년 째 승진하지 못하고 있다. 범죄를 근절하는데 헌신하며 최근에는 로만 시오니스(블랙 마스크)를 잡기 위해 혈안이 되어 있다. 정의롭고 열정적인 인물. 할리 퀸이 조커와 헤어진 것을 알아차린 후 그를 잡기 위해 애쓰지만 어쩐지 쉽지가 않다.
4.4 카산드라 케인
모부가 없어 위탁가정에 보내졌지만 카산드라의 존재를 달가워 하는 사람은 없고, 소매치기를 하지만 번번히 붙잡혀 경찰서에 가곤 한다. 여느날처럼 신나게 행인들의 주머니를 털다가 로만의 심부름으로 버티넬리 가의 다이아몬드를 운반하고 있던 빅터 재즈의 주머니에까지 손을 뻗게 되고, 곧 경찰에게 붙잡히지만 들키지 않으려 다이아를 삼켜버린다. 이 행동이 후에 어떤 파장을 불러올지 모른 채로.
4.5 헌트리스
본명 헬레나 버티넬리. 헌트리스(사냥꾼)는 스스로 붙인 별명이며 하지만 다들 석궁킬러라고 부른다, 종종 '내가 누군지 알아?'라는 진부한 대사를 무게 잡고 혼자 연습하기도 한다. 그는 한 때 고담 시에서 가장 부유했던 마피아 버티넬리 가문의 딸이었으나, 막대한 가문의 재산으로 인해 일가족이 몰살 당하고, 한 마음 약한 똘마니에게 발견되어 운 좋게 살아남아 킬러로 길러진다. 내내 복수를 꿈꾸며 살아온 그는 자신의 주 무기인 석궁으로 한 명씩 복수를 해나가는데...
5 설정 및 세계관
영화 수어사이드 스쿼드와 같은 세계관을 공유하며 이후 스토리를 다루고 있다. 할리퀸이 조커와 헤어진 뒤에 벌어진 사건에 대한 이야기다. 조커와 헤어진 할리퀸은 그동안 자신이 아닌 조커를 두려워했던 적들이 많았음을 알게 된다. 할리퀸에 대한 복수를 꿈꾸는 적들이 끊임없이 등장하며, 신변의 위협을 느낀 할리는 도망쳐보지만 결국 붙잡힌다. 그리고 자신의 목숨을 건 거래를 시도해 위기를 극복하려 한다. 이 장면에서 할리퀸이 과거 정신심리학 박사였었다는 설정을 잘 활용한 사례로 손꼽히기도 한다.

6.1 여성주의적 분석
여성주연, 여성감독, 여성각본인 작품이다.
감독 <a href="/dok/캐시%20얀">캐시 얀</a>은 중국계 미국인 여성인데, 원작과는 달리 동양인인 카산드라 캐릭터가 나올 수 있었던 주된 공신으로 보인다.
각본 크리스티나 호드슨 역시 평소 여성 캐릭터의 활약에 관심이 많았으며, 여성주연 영화였던 <범블비>의 각본가이기도 하다. 그의 전작과 이번 작품을 통해 그의 의지가 잘 표현된 것을 확인할 수 있다.

영화의 플롯을 살펴보면 메이저 제작사에서 만들어진 영화로서는 매우 특이한 점이 여럿 존재하는데, 이 특이한 요소들이 모두 여성중심적인 요소들이다. 먼저 버즈 오브 프레이의 주역인 여성 캐릭터들은 공통점을 찾아볼 수 없을 만큼 서로 다른 환경과 캐릭터성을 가지고 있다. 그리고 디씨 시리즈 속 인물들이면서도 대부분 초인적인 능력을 가지고 있지 않다. 전혀 다른 환경에서 전혀 다르게, 때로는 엉망진창이고 때로는 무력하게 살아온 여성들이 만나면서 이뤄지는 이야기라는 소리다. 헐리우드의 유수한 메이저 제작사가 내어놓은 여성중심 영화는 상당수가 가족과의 관계나 "여성 영웅" 개인에 천착하곤 했다. 그러나 버즈 오브 프레이의 주역들은 "사이드킥"에 불과했던 악당이거나 소매치기거나 현실에 체념한 가수거나 매번 남동료에게 치여살았던 형사거나 조금 특이한 헌터다. 평범하고 괴상한 사람들의, 어쩌면 그간 사이드킥 또는 엑스트라로서 배제당해온 여성들이 주인공이 되어 벌어지는 이야기라는 점에서 여성 관객들은 더 깊이 공감할 수 있게 된다.
평소에는 이해관계가 다르고 서로를 못 잡아먹어 안달이 난 여성들이, 공동의 적인 남성이 생기자 연대하여 위기를 극복한다는 점에서도 여성주의적으로 높은 평가를 줄 수 있을 것이다. 그 과정 또한 절대적인 누군가의 도움으로 단번에 이루어지는 비현실적인 것이 아니라 우여곡절 끝에 주체적으로 성취된다는 점에서 작품이 얘기하는 여성 연대가 잘 느껴진다.
또 헐리우드 영화인데도 "썩 괜찮은 남자"가 단 한 명도 등장하지 않는다. 어떻게 잘 찾아본다면 좀 멀쩡한 조연남캐가 존재할 수는 있겠다만, 약간이라도 비중을 얻은 남성 캐릭터들은 모두 악랄하거나 하잘것 없거나 배신하거나 망가진다. 남성의 급소가 여러 번 깨진다는 후문이 있었으나, 생각보다는 덜 깨지-지만 아무튼 대수롭지 않게 깨지는 게 남성의 급소라는 점, 공공의 적이던 남성의 최후 또한 상당히 하찮고 우습다는 점이 극의 오락성을 끌어올리기도 한다.

- 영화 속 가장 공을 들였다고 전해지는 에그치즈샌드위치 씬은 사실 계란이 아니라 오리알을 사용했다. 할리 퀸 역의 마고 로비가 계란 흰자에 알러지가 있기 때문에 오리알로 바꿨다고 한다. 항간에는 제작사에서 "계란을 먹지도 못하는데 왜 에그샌드위치를 쓴건가요?" 하고 물어보기도 했다고.
- 카산드라 케인 역의 엘라 제이 바스코는 영화 촬영이 진행되는 동안 여러 차례 의상 제작을 했다. 엘라가 한창 성장기 청소년인 탓에 2주마다 사이즈가 달라질 정도로 자랐기 때문이라고.
